Archive for February, 2010

Leah Hall, the campaign email newsletter editor, has published the February/March 2010 newsletter.  She notes,

In 2010, we have the opportunity to bring positive change and new leadership to City Hall. San Leandro has central proximity to vast environmental, cultural and civic resources, but we also face sobering challenges. In understanding these challenges, Stephen Cassidy has shown exceptional insight and has proven his commitment to leadership that is inclusive, broad based, and is driven to find the best solutions for our vibrant community and its future.

The new Fred Korematsu Campus at San Leandro High School was profiled in today’s Daily Review.  I’m proud to have championed a 9th grade campus as the solution to the overcrowding at the high school.  It will open later this year in time for the start of 2010-11 school year. Students from John Muir and Bancroft Middle Schools will come together and form the first class at the new campus.

The Daily Review noted:

A state-of-the-art, three-story, 38,000-square-foot freshman campus is rising on three acres between Bancroft Avenue and East 14th Street, just a short walk from the high school.  . . . Construction began in December 2008, and the campus is 75 percent complete, on budget and on schedule for completion this summer . . .

For the reporting period ending on December 31, 2009, I have $5,053 in cash on hand.  The majority of my contributions (both total dollar amount and number of contributors) were from San Leandro residents.

Mayor Santos has $24,628, close to 85% coming from construction and city employee unions.  Hardly any identified contributions were from San Leandrans.   Moreover, Mayor Santos’ contribution disclosure form contains a significant omission. Last year, he listed $27,500 in campaign debt, but no campaign debt was reported on this recent statement nor was there any record of it being paid off.

Council member Starosciak has $13,675, the largest contribution came from a Los Angeles based political action committee.

My opponents had a substantial head start. I started raising funds only in mid November. So they had six months, I had six weeks.

My campaign is a grassroots one and gaining momentum. Unlike my opponents, there is no professional political consultant shaping my communications with the community.

A ten-member steering committee, all San Leandro residents, is overseeing the campaign. They have generously donated their time and labor to creating my website, literature, and hosting events. These are valuable contributions not reflected in the monetary donations listed above. In total, I raised $9,316 in monetary and nonmonetary contributions by the end of 2009.

On Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at 6:30 p.m., local boxing historian Keith Foster will be showing a series of classic boxing matches from his extensive collection on the big screen at The Englander (101 Parrott Street, downtown San Leandro).  The videos will include The Rumble in the Jungle fight between then world champion George Forman and challenger Muhammed Ali.

A $10 donation is requested.  Food and drinks will be available for order from the bar.  You can make your donation at the door.
